Future Diary // Mirai Nikki

WATCHED 01.08.2017 - 14.08.2017 AVERAGE RATING: 8.0

Deus, the God of time and space has reached the end of his lifespan. To choose the next God to take his place, he selects 13 individuals and gives each their own 'diary' - a system in their phones (or scroll, or notebooks) that tells the owner the future based on the topics they often write in their normal diaries. The 13 selected participants have to use their diaries to track down and kill the other diary holders by shattering/breaking their diaries, or by killing them physically. The goal for this was to be the last participant standing, and then become the new God of space and time. These people were selected because they use their diaries so much, and constantly about the things they write in them. Two of these selected characters are called Yuuki and Yuno. They are both high school students, happen to be in the same school and even in the same year. Yuno wrote about Yuuki in her diary, day-in-day-out, so she therefore she can see Yuuki's future in her diary. And Yuuki always writes about what happens to and around him, therefore he can see what will happen to him
and around him but in the future. That helps him avoid -DEAD END-s. When a participant meets their Dead End, they get killed by another player or through another situation. They must try to change this fate, and fight back. Yuno has a big crush on Yuuki and Yuuki's starting to feel the same to Yuno. They start working together and try to kill the others. During all this, they meet new people like Akise who aren't diary owners, and we get to hear their backstories which go into depth of each character and why they are here. After Yuuki sticks with Yuno for a bit and grows closer to her, he gets invited to her house, where he accidentally discovers corpses, exposing Yuno's true nature as a Yandere. But that doesn't stop him from leaving her as she's very helpful in his survival. Later, we find out that these corpses belonged to Yuno's parents. The love relationship between Yuuki and Yuno is really complicated as Yuno often tries to kill Yuuki, and Yuuki often slaps Yuno in the face. Yuuki goes from a shy, introvert child to a psychopath that only wants to become God and uses Yuno to kill everyone, too. One of the first diary owners to deal with them was 9th, also known as
Minene Uryuu. She owns the Escape Diary which purely shows her situations that will occur and how she can escape from danger. She started blowing up the school where Yuuki and Yuno were in at that very moment, because Minene wanted to kill them to become god. Yuno protects Yuuki and helps him escape the building. They then find themselves on the school's yard and they battle Minene. She finally retreats after Yuuki manages to throw a dart in her right eye. (Explanations on the others will be listed below). After Yuno, Yuuki and others killing many, and pulling through some ecchi stuff, only Yuno and Yuuki are the only diary holders left. Suddenly, we see how there are more Yuno's from alternative worlds. Yuuki and Yuno battle out these versions by traveling to their times with them, where we are shown more gruesome scenes of Yuno's life, like why she killed her parents - because they were abusive and locked her in a cage, leaving her to die. In the end, Yuuki becomes God with Yuno on his side. Before the end, too, Akise confesses his love for Yuuki right in front of Yuno, and even kisses him. This of course lead for Yandere-chan to kill him by decapitating Akise's head.

The first diary holder is Yuuki with the Random Diary which was explained before.
The second holder is Yuno who has the Yukiteru Diary which was also explained before.
The third diary holder is Takao Hiyama who holds the Murder Diary. He was the first holder to be killed by Yuno and Yuuki after Yuuki was killed by him and was reborn in the second world (which we learn about towards the end of the story. Yuuki uses one of his darts to shatter Hiyama's diary, killing him.
The forth is Keigo Kurusu with the Criminal Investigation Diary. He was a police officer, and during the story, he works together with Minene. He has a son called Yoi, and with his life messed up due to this game, Yoi's disease and the messed up situations he find himself in, he turns crazy and eventually eliminates himself as he wasn't able to get what he wanted. He asked Minene to take care of his son for him too.
Fifth is Reisuke Houjou. A 5 year old boy who holds the Hyper Vision Diary - this is inside a colouring book instead of a phone. He may seem like an ordinary and cute little child, but because of his parents who ignore him, often fight and who are abusive, he learned to take care of himself instead and has a more complex way of thinking than any other normal 5 year old. He uses his age to fool people, but then jumps out and attacks like the sadistic, creepy and cruel kid he actually is.
Yuno kills him after he tries to kill her and Yuuki with a poisonous gas he let go in the house they were in, as he wore a gas mask.
The sixth diary holder is Tsubaki Kasugano who holds the Clairvoyance diary - a diary in a scroll instead of a phone. It shows her own future through the eyes of her followers. Tsubaki was raised within the walls of the Omekata Temple and was often raped. She fights Yuki and Yuuno with some helpers but still ends up getting killed as her hand gets sliced off by Yuno (because she kissed him), and so ends up being unable to protect her diary from being hit by Yuuki's dart, as she expected her
hand to be there.
Diary holders seven are Marco Ikusaba and Ai Mikami - a very in love, and married couple. Their diaries are called the Exchange Diaries and it helps them protect one another. They always stick together and protect each other. But Yuno's too strong and ends up getting them both killed together.
The eight diary holder is Kamado Ueshita. A mother of numerous foster children. She also raised Marco, Ai (7th) and Orin (assistant to Kamado). She has the Blog Diary. She has no interest in becoming god but would like to become god to give her children a better life. As Yuuki, Yuno and Akise are there to kill her, she gets her orphans to battle for her. But they're all no match for our duo and Kamado ends up getting killed too. She loves children in general and even showed worry for Yuuki and Akise when they were hurt.
The Ninth diary holder is Minene Uryu, who owns the Escape Diary, but she was already explained before.
Diary holder 10 is Karyuudo Tsukishima with the Breeder Diary. He uses dogs to fight the others, and his daughter who is called Hinami uses the diary more often than him. It tells him about the status of his dogs.
The eleventh diary holder is John Bacchus who has the Watcher diary. According to Muru Muru (Deus' assistant), John had a 91.02% chance of being the winner, as he can see everyone's future, and whereabouts in his diary. John was even the one to create this game together with Deus. John is located in this very secured building, and he watches over Yuuki and Yuno who are trying to get through and kill him. With John distracted by Yuuki, Yuno somehow manages to open the final door that leads right to him and shoots him in the head, killing him.
The 12th diary holder is Yomotsu Hirasaka. A pretty popular guy to normal people. He owns the Justice Diary. He gets into a fight with Yuno after he tries to kill Yuuki with his duplicates. Yuno goes on a killing spree and so manages to kill him.

The thirteenth and final diary holder is Azami Kirisaki, owning the Video Diary. She's a mysterious character but ends up working and becoming friends with Yuuki and Yuno. She really loves her little sister, but she got killed by Diary Holder 3. So, she seeks revenge as she finds out he's also part of the game. She wants to become God to heal/revive her sister. She does everything she can to make this come true but dies.
